What is CPR?
CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a life saving emergency first aid technique that is done when a person finds it difficult to breathe or he has cardiac arrest. CPR is an artificial process of making the oxygenated blood flow through the whole body when the heart is not functioning.
During cardiac arrest, the heart stops pumping. As a result of which different vital organs of the body like brain stops functioning and the patient dies. CPR helps to flow oxygenated blood to the whole body. CPR keeps the heart active. If you are trained in CPR you can easily tackle cardiac arrest before the arrival of any medical aid.
When will you perform CPR?
If you find a person:
• laying unconscious
• not breathing or finding it difficult to breathe,
• no pulse felt,
• suspect that the person is having cardiac arrest.
If you find the above mentioned symptoms in a person, do the following things to confirm whether you have to perform CPR or not:
Call or gently shake the person to check his consciousness. Place your hand on his chest to feel any movement of the chest level. Put your ear on his chest to hear heartbeats. Place you fingers in front of his nose or mouth to feel for his breaths.
If you find the person is not breathing or partially breathing and unresponsive, call for an ambulance and start doing CPR immediately.
Why do you need to learn CPR?
Accidents can happen at anytime and anywhere. That is why being prepared for the emergency situation is a must for saving the lives of our near and dear ones.
Cardiac arrest is such a serious condition that if you do not treat it immediately there is a very high chance for the person to die. An instant and immediate performance of CPR can save a life. This is why, it is very essential for every one to know how to perform CPR.
Performing CPR:
To perform CPR, lay the patient on a flat surface. Carefully clean his airway if there is any blockage (vomit or any other substance inside his mouth). Place the heel of your one hand at the center of his chest and put another hand over your former hand. Now press on his chest so that the chest level lowers around 2 to 2.5 inches below for 30 times. The rate for chest compression should be 100 to 120 times per minute. Give 2 times rescue breathe after every 30 times chest compression. Rescue breath is usually given following the head tilt- mouth lift or head tilt- jaw thrust method. One of the methods are applied depending on the condition of the patient. Thus CPR is performed by giving a set 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths on repeat, until the patient gains consciousness or any medical help arrives at the spot. If you do not feel comfortable or confident to give mouth to mouth rescue breath, then only give chest compressions.
Performing CPR is very tiring task. Take help from others if you get tired of doing CPR but do not stop CPR at all until the patient breaths or gains consciousness. Make sure the person from whom you are taking help knows how to perform it properly.
What is AED?
AED or automated external defibrillator is a portable medical device that detects heart rhythm and used to give electric shock to cardiac arrest patient. It helps to re-establish the irregular heart rhythm and thus the heart starts functioning well. AED is available in almost every public place.
There is a slight difference in terms of positioning your hands to do CPR on infants, adults and childrens. Wrong positioning your hands while chest compression or giving rescue breath incorrectly will do no good. You should know exactly with how much pressure should you give chest compressions. Putting too much pressure while doing chest compression might lead to broken ribs or bones.
